Derrick Freeman is a powerhouse in the New Orleans music scene, known for his dynamic role as a drummer, vocalist, bandleader, and composer.

With a style that seamlessly fuses jazz, funk, hip-hop, and brass band traditions, Freeman has carved out a unique space in New Orleans’ vibrant music community. Raised in Houston, Texas, and steeped in gospel and jazz from an early age, he moved to New Orleans to attend the University of New Orleans, studying under jazz luminary Ellis Marsalis. This move marked the beginning of a deep connection with the city and its music.

As a founding member and leader of Soul Brass Band, Freeman has been instrumental in bringing the traditional New Orleans brass sound to modern audiences. Under his direction, Soul Brass Band has captivated crowds at major festivals worldwide, including the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, and Telluride Jazz Festival, showcasing an innovative approach that combines brass band roots with elements of contemporary music. His talents extend beyond the bandstand; Freeman is a skilled lyricist and producer whose solo projects incorporate a broad musical palette, ranging from hard-hitting hip-hop tracks to jazz fusion and experimental funk.

Freeman’s versatility has also led him to collaborate with a diverse range of musicians, from New Orleans legends like Kermit Ruffins and Dr. John to modern jazz innovators. His ability to adapt and lead in various musical settings has made him a sought-after talent in the city’s eclectic music circles.

The Soul Brass Band knows exactly how to bring that New Orleans funk. Led by frontman Derrick Freeman, the band is one of the best modern representations of what a New Orleans Brass Band should sound like.
